Happy new year guys! I'm back!

I said I was going to be updating this devlog weekly but now it's monthly lol. But new year new me! I'm going to (try to) upload weekly again now that it's a new school semester and I'm less busy than the last 2 months.

Also, you might have noticed that my name changed to Gypi. Don't worry, I'm still the same person that wrote the previous devlogs! I just wanted to go under a different name.

Sorry for not posting for like 2 months! I was super busy in December because of my finals so we didn't meet that much. But we did make A LOT of progress during our winter break!

JL and I met almost every day mainly to work. So we have these 2 to 3-hour work sessions for 2 whole weeks!

I finished the Godot tutorial but I… made an embarrassing mistake. I'm trying to make a top-down-styled game but I followed a 2d platformer tutorial! So I found a top-down Godot tutorial and just customized the code and assets to match my game. And it's going pretty well! I have already implemented all the basic controls and elements of my game and now I just need to work on the hard parts :(

Here's my current game! This is just a random layout of houses and pathways and stuff so that I can start working on the code before JL is done with the art. I do not own these assets. I found them on itch.io. It will be changed when JL is done with the art assets.

Main Scene - Godot

What I have done so far:

  1. Basic player movements (up, down, left, right)
  2. Player animations (idle and walk)
  3. Cows as villagers (with random movements for now. Will be customizing it later)
  4. Cow animations (idle and walk)
  5. The image of the mailbox (it's a chicken nest for now lol. Planning to add an egg to it whenever there's mail. Again, will change it later)
  6. The Village
  7. Enterable houses
  8. Interior of one house (just a bookshelf in there lol)
  9. Restricted movement to only on path tiles
  10. Camera that follows the player

JL finished 2 storylines for 2 of our characters! She decided to do a hand-drawn art style instead of pixel art and is working on the main character animation! I will show it to you when it's done!

Since school is starting soon (tomorrow), we can't meet every day. We are planning to meet for 2 hours every Friday night and sometimes 2 hours on Sunday if JL has time. We couldn't do Friday night last semester because I have school events almost every Friday night so get home at around 11 pm T^T. Glad that ended :)

Here's my current plan! I was about to have a mental breakdown about how I was going to continue the programming of the game so I made a plan. It's actually really useful and prevented my breakdown lol.

Look at my poor attempt at organizing this mess lol

I know. My handwriting is not the greatest.

Anyway, that's it for the last 2 months! Maybe we didn't make as much progress as we could, but we'll try to catch up in the next few weeks as we have increased our plan for meetings and work sessions. Without the work sessions, I probably wouldn't have gotten anything done lol. Besides working, we also chatted a lot (didn't affect my work too much but it did make it pretty fun!). This devlog is probably the longest I've written cause it did cover like 2 months of work. I have to prepare for school tomorrow now :( See you again next week at around this time!
