Talk:Game Ideas
From GDWiki
I dont know if all this indie talk is a bit offtopic ... I also wonder How the game ideas should be presented .. one big list, or links to sub-pages? --Kasper Hviid 04:17, 21 Oct 2004 (EDT)
We'll just see how it grows, stuff can always be moved around. --Marijn
For those who are interested, this page resulted from this thread over at the Linux Game Tome. --Ryan Clark 08:27, 21 Oct 2004 (EDT)
People might want to add a comment to one of the game ideas, as it is the case with 'stickfighter'. I think that such comments are a good thing. But is there any 'standards' for comments, or do we just have to write "comment" in a headline below the idea? --Kasper Hviid 10:25, 30 Oct 2004 (EDT)
I think adding comments is fine... it's really up to your judgement. If you see something that doesn't look good, or seems out of place, then feel free to modify it. I'd suggest that, after a while, the comments should be re-written to add more detail to the "game idea" being commented on. Older comments could be removed in this way... otherwise the page might fill up with comments :) Ryan Clark 21:44, 30 Oct 2004 (EDT)

[edit] Rewrite
Ilg. This REALLY should be rewritten/reorganized. Or at least, it should get a *bit* of structure, and some guidelines on how to stick to them.
- I agree that it's kind of unruly right now. I think part of the issue is that game ideas are a dime a dozen... add that to the fact that some of these are gameplay ideas, some are game design ideas, some are 'art direction' ideas, etc. IMO, the actual execution of those ideas usually has far more impact than the idea itself. A cool idea will hook me for about 5 minutes... beyond that, the game had better be fun.
- How is this relavent to the subject at hand? Well, I wonder how exactly should we clean this up? Do we remove ideas, only to have them readded? Do we shorten the existing ones, only to lose some degree of context/content? Do we put each idea on it's own page (clean, but scary to maintain)? Just looking for input here...--Wade 10:18, 7 November 2005 (EST)
- Ok, I put the TOC back in... that makes it a little easier to navigate. Short of that, I'm not sure how we can really improve it. I guess we could categorize the various ideas into genres... that would organize the TOC a bit better, too. -Ryan Clark 13:36, 7 November 2005 (EST)
I just registered two seconds ago. I use the same user name on Wikipedia. Anyway, to the point, this page is a mess, and I personally wouldn't throw around a good idea, not because it would be stolen, but because it might be stolen and then misused or ruined. Instead, it would probably be better to have a forum for throwing around ideas on game engines and/or tutorials, and perhaps some file swapping between users. An irc chat page would be a real good idea. Dessydes
[edit] Use directly a wiki of Ideas ;)
Take a look at Idiki: http://idiki.dyne.org
and at the Game category: http://idiki.dyne.org/wiki/Category:Game
-- Is it possible to include all the pages which belongs to the category Game of Idiki in this wiki?
[edit] Second Life
Second Life is just someone who bought a AlphaWorld/ActiveWorld server from ActiveWords (or Worlds Inc. depending on when they bought it). The orignal is still at activeworlds.com and Worlds Inc news product Worlds Chat is at worlds.com. I'm not sure I'd call either a "game".
[edit] Not a game
Second life does not qualify as a game, it is barely a simulation, just like "The Sims" is not really a game, it's more like a digital toy, there is no story, no objective, no real challenge, its basicly just a set of tools with wich the user can fool arround with, thought the characters may be able to die, it has no real concept of loss.
OffTopic, some of the examples are just wrong, metal gear and splinter cell are not really shooters, they are rather cetered arround the stealth than the shooting, specially the latest versions. Third person shooters are more in the line of Mafia or Grand Theft Auto (3, vice city, san andreas and counting). Just like alone in the dark, while it involves the killing of monsters, it has several Graphic Adventure features, so it would be more like an Action/Adventure game.
[edit] Corrections
I've done some corrections to the Established list, still i put it here up for opinions, first I aded some non LucasArts graphic adventures, it was just unfair to say that they all come from lucasarts. Also removed Diablo II from the MMORPG list, Diablo II is NOT massive, while it does include a multiplay and the later difficultyes are rather balanced for party play, its fully playable as a single player game without loosing much of the games features and gameplay, MMOs are based on multiplay, and only some of them support single play, but this limits their gameplay
