GDWiki:Sign your comments
From GDWiki
| | This page documents a proposed GDWiki policy. The policy is not yet in final form and is seeking further input on the talk page. Before editing this page, please make sure that your revision reflects consensus on the way the policy should be developed. |
Signing the comments on talk pages and other appropriate article pages (see below) is considered good etiquette. It helps make discussions go smoothly by making sure all parties involved understand who they are talking with and can appropriately address specific other users as needed. This policy defines when and how signatures should be applied on GDWiki.

[edit] When to sign
All talk page comments should be signed, but article pages should not be (GDWiki does not have a concept of article ownership). However, some article pages are essentially discussion or ad-hoc forum pages for which it makes sense to have signatures. For example, new sections in the Current events page should in general be signed.
[edit] How to sign
You may sign an edit simply by adding your name or some other identifiable string at the end of your post. However, the wiki software provides a more automatic mechanism for signing that is generally preferred: simply append four tildes (~~~~) to the end of your post. When the edit is saved, the tildes will be replaced with your username, along with a timestamp.
[edit] Anonymous users
Users who participate without logging in can (and should) sign comments as well. The same process applies as for a regular, logged-in user. The users IP address is used in lieu of a username.
[edit] Fixing unsigned comments
When a talk page comment is not signed, any user can append a note to the unsigned comment to show which user made it, using subst: and the {{unsigned}} template. Although this is not required, it can be helpful to clarify the discussion. However, be careful not to attribute an unsigned comment to the wrong user.
