carmack and quake 3 sound

So, I know this stuff is older, but does anyone know how JC used wav buffers - did he use separate ones in an array, or did he actually use one large buffer for all the sounds?

I've been using directsound for my own project, and have got wav sound playing thru the soundcard, so good.. but I'm not having any luck putting the sounds into an array.. does anyone know how JC did it?ben
