A Sad Day

Hey guys,

I'll be canceling my GDNet+ account soon. I'm moving my blog to smallnum.blogspot.com. I'm in the process of porting over my recent posts there.

It's been fun to be around here, and I hope I can find a way to export all of my posts (there's some really old ones that are great reads if I need to laugh). If anyone knows anything about export posts, let me know... I'm pretty pessimistic about it.

Anyway, even though I'm getting into game development, I'll probably be focusing more on Scheme and other things which most people around here aren't really interested in. And I simply like the blogger software better :)

Cheers

If you don't mind me asking; why are you canceling your subscription?

Sorry to hear you're off. I've always found your journal very interesting, as I'm sure others do.

I guess I don't know enough about your field to have ever really commented, but that doesn't mean people aren't reading with interest [smile].

@EvilSteve: Simply put, I don't really come to gamedev.net much anymore. It's just a personal thing. I'm more involved in the Scheme community (IRC, mailing lists, etc.). When I start doing more complicated 3d graphics, I may start poking around the forums again. But my blog topics and questions will typically be detached from the community here since I'll be focusing on Scheme.

Blogger is a better blogging engine too, particularly with navigating older posts. However, that's not the main reason I'm ending this blog.

I'm tempted to rant about the widespread use of C++, honestly. Although I'm excited to see more people using Python, or other languages, there's still a really heavy bias towards C++ for game development. I really don't understand why. C++ is truly an awful language, in more ways than one. It's far from being the only way to achieve extreme performance in a higher-level language. It's a legacy problem, I guess.

@EasilyConfused: Thanks! I'm glad a few others found it interesting.

as a fellow person interested in theory i making a personal request that you dont :). Until hitting a brick wall of responsibilities I was making a game in a mix of Nemerle and F#. An impure functional programming language with hygenic macros. I have seen your posts and what you do with scheme, enjoyed it and even found some debatable points I did not fully agree with. i would engage more actively but been really busy recently. however in the future i will be sure to make an effort to reply more frequently.

despite the culture of not commenting here, if you go over to blogspot or whatever your chances of getting views and comments are far reduced. thats why those other people with blogs cross post their stuff here.

sorry to see you go.

You can't export but you can copy over stuff and you should be able to set the date of posts that you make over on blogspot to match the date of the post you copied/pasted from here. That's what I had to do for my wordpress blog
