Just back from vacation, and thought I'd give a status update for all of the adoring TotAW players out there.
Chapter 3 is going through the final stages of testing. I plan to release it, along with a slightly updated TotAW version, in the next few weeks.

Thinking about treasure lately. When I set out with the SENG engine (the game engine behind Temple of the Abyssal Winds), I was just going to make up any treasure you found by hand. So, in the quest where you defeat the orcs, something like a 10000 gold reward is needed. I would look through the av…
I saw an interesting article:
http://www.darkshire.net/jhkim/rpg/magic/antiscience.html
The main point being that magic systems in RPGs are too "scientific". In my mind, this means logical and reproducible. To some extent, I agree... in fiction, I really appreciate when magic comes across as somethin…

I saw this cool (and extensive!) article about where to point the camera, in games:

The article is specific to side-scrollers (all the way back to the arcade "classic" Rally X from 1980), but I found the material to b…

Finished playing Avernum 6 on the iPad last night. Beautiful game design and writing. It's not exactly the game I want to make, but I appreciate it as a game designer, and had a blast playing it.
More about Avernum 6 at Spiderweb Software: http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/
So, in the RPG engine behind Temple of the Abyssal Winds (http://prankster.com/totaw), there are 6 different types of weapons:
- Light Blades
- Heavy Blades
- Staves
- Bludgeons
- Axes
- Bows
Part of building up your character, especially a combat-focused character, is choosing which weapons your character is profici…
This one hurts. Negative review of TotAW:
http://www.hookedgamers.com/pc/temple_of_the_abyssal_winds/review/article-1432.html
I'm not going to lie, that hurts motivation a little bit. However, now is not the time for deep introspection. I need to crank out the remaining two and 1/2 chapters of TotAW.…

So, reading various forum posts on Temple of the Abyssal Winds, people just trying out the game, I see that one of the first things they talk about is the character creation. No surprise, in an RPG with a fairly deep system, like TotAW, character creation is moderately involved, and pretty fun. Twe…

Thinking about community interaction for Temple of the Abyssal Winds. Now, my ideal would be to have a rich, vibrant forum full of fresh and interesting discussion on TotAW. However, my suspicions are that the forum would mostly just sit empty. Also, previous efforts at running a forum have had a l…

Figured out (I believe) the issue with the app store. My code was barfing on displaying the chapter price, in a non-US locale. I still couldn't get the bug to exactly manifest, but by changing the locale (in code), I got it to blow up in the same place as the crash report from the app store review.…
Rats, my App Store review failed. Rejected because the app crashes when you go to purchase another chapter. Look at the crash dump, it appears that the app store is returning a bogus value for the price of the chapter. Hopefully this is just some weird manifestation of the review process... chapter…
Starting to plan Chapter 4 today. Also, stopped back to fix a few bug that came up working through Chapter 3. For instance:
Had some time over the holidays, so I banged out another Infocom game: Spellbreaker. For more information about my attempt to finish all of these games, see here:https://www.gamedev.net/blog/717/entry-2259971-the-infocom-project/

Well, I was just about to submit Temple of the Abyssal Winds, chapters 1 and 2, to the iOS App Store. With the plan to release them for Windows as soon as they went live in the App Store. But then wiser minds (my wife) pointed out that we're going out of the country for 2 weeks soon, and submitting…
