Continuous Refinement

But tonight, on this small planet, on Earth, we're going to rock civilization.

Board games
So, I think I've settled on the project that I want to undertake next year. It's a system for the rapid development of board games.

The first part of the project will be to design a domain-specific language for describing board games. I want this language to be a subset of English; when a board game…

More feed!
I've been playing around with Vista a bit and discovered Vista Calendar. I've got a copy of Office Ultimate, so I'll doubtless use Outlook instead, but it's still kinda nice. I think eventually we'll see things like that migrate to OS-level datastore services - kinda like the 'Common RSS feed store…

UPGRADE'D
Well, it's been 20 minutes and the 8800 seems to be running smoothly. Machine sounds quieter than it used to, though this might be down to me blowing some air into the case while it was open. I was a little concerned as my power supply is only 500W, while the recommended is 600W, but the minimum is…

More work on the new journals
I've spent the afternoon doing a bit more work on the new Journal software - you can see the current state of it here if you like. It's still WIP - I hope to finish and deploy it within the next two months - and I appreciate any feedback.

Notable features:
* A journal is now a bunch of threads rather…

www or not
If you've not noticed and it was affecting you: a day or two ago I fixed the problem with "gamedev.net" not being treated the same as "www.gamedev.net" - you can now enter any GDNet URL while missing the 'www.' portion and it will work correctly.

(Turned out to just be one single box in the IIS conf…

RSS change
In light of the new RSS feed on the front page, I've made some changes to the way RSS is handled across the site.

Previously, every single page on the site exposed the news feed (https://www.gamedev.net/xml/), and, optionally, one other feed with a custom URL and the same title as the page. That's o…

Frontpage update
You may have noticed that the front page has updated - but this is not your usual 'new stuff available.' This actually marks the deployment of my new "automatically update the front page with published articles and reviews" script.

For as long as anyone can remember, updating the 'featured content' …

Public announcement
My father would like it known that the money my mother used to pay for my 8800 was drawn from a joint bank account, and that he was consulted upon and approved the purchase. As such he considers himself partially responsible for the purchase of my 8800.

GDC coverage back up
I've spent the morning restoring some of the pieces of content that went missing when we jumped servers. The IGF interviews should now be back up, along with the GDC 2007 coverage.

Rogue is on Steam!
I've just discovered that Rogue Trooper - the game I spent a year working on at Rebellion - is available over Steam for $27 (or in a package with Just Cause and Project: Snowblind for $54).

Go get it! It's a great game. [grin]

Oof

Oof

Well, things are calming down. Most of the content that was new in the past month is still missing from the site - I'll be restoring it early next week, I expect - but the site as a whole is running OK.

There've been some issues, mostly relating to the fact that I've massively tightened NTFS permiss…

Server switch
We've temporarily moved the site to a different server. Well, I say 'moved' - it's actually a new install, synthesised from our source code server and various other bits, which is why certain things (e.g. the frontpage) are a little out of date. Still, pretty damn fast, isn't it? This is apparently…

MVP '07: Day Zero
Out of the frying pan into the rainy northwest province. Or something like that.

I'm now happily settled at the casa del ZMan - much thanks to him. Tomorrow we'll be going into town to register for the summit.

GDC '07: Day whatever
Bastards wouldn't let me into the XNA party because I don't have ID with my date of birth on it. Do I look under 21?

And to top it off, Walgreens don't have an SD->USB adapter, so you'll have to wait longer for the photos I've taken.

GDC '07: Day Two
Or at least the end of it.

God I'm tired... almost finished writing up my coverage of the Casual Games Summit on Monday. Today I was supposed to be at the Intel Threading day... I went along at the beginning but didn't get there in time to get a computer, so I had to sit at the back, and then they h…

GDC '07: Day One
I'm sat in the press lounge. I've had a muffin. I have about an hour until I have to leave for my session, "Casual Games Summit 101." It's a day-long tutorial thing that breaks down into smaller lectures:

  • What is a casual game? Figures that the day starts by discussing a definition of what we're spe…

GDC '07: the adventure begins!
We'll begin with the obligatory written-on-the-plane-and-posted-upon-landing entry.

As much as my brother may praise Virgin Atlantic's onboard entertainment system, and as much as they tend to be my airline of choice, I'd still much rather not be in a plane at all. It's the best of a bad deal. I've …

It's 6:30am. I've spent the past several hours solving a 50x50 version of TANSTAAFL's "Cowhead" game.

I'm going to sleep now. That is, if I can see anything other than green shapes on red hexagons when I close my eyes.

OK, I've put together a preliminary schedule. Nothing booked for the Tuesday yet because I'm hoping that I can still get a place on the multithreading tutorial.

GDC

Planning my GDC schedule, now that they've put the scheduler online. Help me choose what to attend?

Also: Go and see Hot Fuzz! I command you. And if you're not in the UK (where it's out), then go have a word with your local cinema and ask them to show it. It's fantastically fun and generally awesome…

Urghf.
I made a minor change to the IOTD - smaller images now use target="_new" instead of &#106avascript for opening new windows. This means they now work with "open in new tab," stuff like that.

Oh, yeah, and I brought the site back online.

I'm going clubbing now. Catch you all later.

Status
4E5 prize allocation is proceeding, albeit slowly. I'm waiting for a few more contact details for people before I can send out all the FastCap Pro licenses - I might give up on those who haven't sent me their details and just pass those I have got along to get them issued. The rest of the pool... a…

Ho hum
I've PM'd the authors of the four entries that have been disqualified so far. If you haven't had anything, then you should be still in the running - for now, at least. (Though there are no more entries under active consideration for disqualification).

Another update
Another game has been disqualified, and there's a fourth that the other judges have brought to my attention that I'll be making the call on tomorrow. Do you folks think I should disclose which entries have been disqualified now, or should I not and let people find out when all the scores are up?

Als…

4E5 update
Just a quick update on the 4E5 judging:

We've now got at least one set of scores for all the entries. I'd like to get at least two for each - certainly for the ones near the top - and I'd like to reexamine some of the ones that are tied. There were issues with the judging system early on that preven…
